The Alamo Trust, The Alamo Plan Restoration and Expansion

San Antonio, Texas, United States

Project Summary

The Alamo Plan Restoration and Expansion aims to repair and preserve the UNESCO World Heritage historic Alamo site in San Antonio, Texas. The plan is centered around three key pillars: preserving the 300-year-old Church and Long Barrack, recapturing the original mission site and battlefield footprint, and creating a new world-class 159,000 SF Visitor Center Museum to tell the site’s full history. The completion of the plan will safeguard the Alamo’s physical structures and honor its historical significance, creating a lasting connection to Texas’s profound history for future generations.

MGAC’s Role

MGAC is providing project management services for the Visitor Center Museum, exhibit installations site-wide, and multiple public plaza projects that are sequenced to provide continuous public access to key components of the Alamo. MGAC is also responsible for project controls across the entire Alamo Plan of ten phased projects, including program-wide budget management, invoice processing, and schedule coordination.

The future Alamo District will encompass City and State property, including various distinct areas known as Alamo Plaza, Plaza de Valero, Alamo Promenade, Alamo Gardens, and the upper and lower Paseo del Alamo leading to the renowned River Walk.

The last and most complex initiative is the creation of a state-of-the-art Visitor Center Museum, that will repurpose two historic building façades and feature a 4D theater, event space, rooftop restaurant, retail areas, café, and house the Phil Collins Texana Collection. The Visitor Center Museum will provide an immersive experience, telling the 300-year-old history of the Alamo, including Native American groups, Spanish colonial settlement, the Battle of the Alamo, and more. The facility will be 159,000 SF, with 32,000 SF of exhibit space. The Visitor Center and Museum alone is estimated to generate $12B in economic benefits, over 8,100 jobs, and $600M in tax revenue for the State of Texas.
