This light-filled, serene suburban retreat was designed by the esteemed architect Farshid Moussavi of Farshid Moussavi Architecture for her own parents. The five-bedroom stretcher-bond brickwork residence is an exercise in subtleties and precision—and strikes a delicate balance between blending in with the surrounding neighbourhood and making a distinctive statement. Cleverly arranged windows obscure direct views into key gathering areas and organisation of rooms within, while still inviting generous levels of natural light. Colours are held to a minimum, casting focus to smart design features like the dining room’s high-polish timber table and chairs. Hues that are present—such as flooring throughout and hand-wash basins in bathrooms, both cast from subtly pigmented concrete—echo the many Persian rugs found across the home.
Moussavi engaged MGAC’s cost management and contract administration teams to help deliver this inherently personal project. As a renowned, award-winning architect, she had unmatched experience in translating an inspired vision into an intricate and detailed design. But this build would mark the first time she remained deeply involved through all phases of construction and close-out. Our team was energised by the opportunity to guide such an acclaimed designer through the world we know so well.
In many ways, the heart of this project was change. As Moussavi saw the home begin to take shape, it was only fitting her design eye spied opportunities to adjust finishes and customise design elements to perfection across its 650 m². We helped navigate each potential evolution smoothly through a meticulous and proactive change control process that demonstrated impact on timeline and budget. Detailing everything in a robust change control log, we held regular liaisons with Moussavi and the design team to ensure everyone remained on the same page and work stayed on track.
This one-of-a-kind build and project of the heart was a testament to the value of an aligned team, as Moussavi’s precise vision could only become reality through the expertise and collaboration of professionals inspired by a shared ethos. This was recognized when House in Hove earned a RIBA South East Regional Award 2023 in the Buildings category.
