MGAC managed the addition of the new 13,000 SF Shepherd Park Community Center located in Washington, DC. Attached to the existing Shepherd Park Elementary School, the new center includes the renovation of the school’s existing cafeteria and warming kitchen into a full-service cooking kitchen, along with a refresh of the school’s multipurpose room.
The community center now consists of a new gymnasium, multipurpose / cafeteria dining room, fitness center, community kitchenette, student and adult restrooms, offices, storage rooms, an outdoor plaza, enhanced landscaping, and access to the adjacent park. For efficient maintenance and decreased water consumption, the landscaping consists of only native plants. A fiber cement panel system of regenerative raw materials lines the exterior facade of the new recreation center. This product, known as “Swisspearl” offers a fireproof, rot-proof, and impact-resistant shelter, as well as thermal insulation to maintain a constant temperature—ultimately reducing energy loss.
The project presented a few challenges, including the completion of construction while the school was occupied by over 400 students. As occupant safety and security are our highest priority, MGAC worked with the client to ensure all construction staff was easily identifiable by always wearing badges and company logo shirts. In addition, the contractor’s safety officers, along with a DGS safety officer, were required to make inspections at a minimum of once per week to provide a report of their findings during site visits. MGAC coordinated construction with the school’s testing days, special programs, recess programs, and school access during student drop-off and pick-up. The project team made sure students were not disrupted during school hours, as air and noise quality was a great concern for parents and school staff.
