Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week

For many people considering their next step after school, full-time university study is not always the most appealing option. Being far from home, uncertainty about their career path, or the desire to start earning money are common reasons why some choose a different route – apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships come in different forms, but usually include a paid job where the individual gains valuable work experience and learns on-the-job training. Alongside this, apprentices spend around 20% of their working hours completing classroom-based learning at a college, university, or external training provider, which then leads to a recognised qualification.

MGAC’s apprenticeship programme has successfully provided numerous young adults with valuable knowledge in their chosen field, and exposure to the construction industry. Joe Hunt is currently undertaking an apprenticeship in our Birmingham office as a Trainee Cost Consultant in conjunction with his Quantity Surveying degree at Birmingham City University. He shared his thoughts on the programme.

What led you to decide to do an apprenticeship?
I liked the idea of gaining on-the-job work experience, earning my own money, and studying at the same time. It provided me with the opportunity to gain a degree at the end of my placement, whilst accumulating no university debt, which seemed like the best of both worlds.

What aspects of your apprenticeship at MGAC have you found most enjoyable?
Being able to go straight into the work environment has been great. MGAC offices work closely together, so it’s enjoyable to collaborate with everyone else in the firm. I feel privileged to be working on some high-level projects early on in my career, such as One Eastside, and working with the BBC, in particular.

Can you describe a typical day and what you’re likely to be learning?
I couldn’t describe a typical working day! The opportunities I’ve had available to me have been of great variety. I’ve learnt a wide range of skills within a very short space of time, and I don’t believe I would have developed as well as I have if I had chosen to go and study full-time instead of taking the apprenticeship route.

What skills did you gain from your MGAC apprenticeship that will hopefully help you further your career?
Professional competency, constantly meeting new people, learning to deal with different personalities, and the ability to network and adapt.

Any advice for someone thinking about undertaking an apprenticeship?
Go for it! I don’t regret my decision in the slightest.
