As Gregor Brad steps into retirement, we take a moment to reflect on his impressive career in the construction industry. Early Beginnings

Gregor’s entry into the construction world was as straightforward as it was serendipitous. Fresh out of school, he found himself scanning the classifieds in the Glasgow Herald, where he stumbled upon an apprenticeship opportunity for a Quantity Surveying Technician. Eager to start his career, Gregor applied, attended the interview in his school uniform, and secured the job. Thus began his lifelong journey in construction.

The Apprenticeship Years

Gregor’s apprenticeship was a blend of hands-on experience and academic learning. He spent one day a week at the Glasgow College of Building and Printing, with the rest of his time dedicated to practical work. This dual approach provided him with a solid foundation in the technical aspects of quantity surveying. Though he didn’t pursue a degree, the knowledge and skills he gained during this period were invaluable.

A Career with MGAC

Gregor’s career is notable for his remarkable loyalty to a single company, Robinson Low Francis (RLF), albeit through various mergers and name changes. Starting with Hugh A. Low and Usherwood, the company evolved into RLF over the years and eventually was acquired by MGAC in 2021. Gregor witnessed and adapted to numerous changes within the organisation, contributing significantly to its success.

Memorable Projects

Over his 50-year career, Gregor worked on numerous projects across various sectors. One project that stands out is the restoration of Provost Skene’s House in Aberdeen, described as the oldest house in the city. The intricate renovation involved extensive lead work, timber repairs, and other meticulous tasks to preserve the historical integrity of the building. The successful completion of this project, surrounded by modern glass-fronted structures, remains a highlight of Gregor’s career.

Another fascinating project was his work at the Clyde Submarine Base in Faslane. While the technical aspects of measuring and surveying were routine, the unique environment of a submarine base added an extra layer of interest and excitement to the job.

Adventures Beyond the Job

Gregor’s time at MGAC wasn’t solely about work. One memorable experience outside the office was a group parachute jump with colleagues. Despite initial trepidation and the humorous episode of a colleague being unable to jump due to weight restrictions, the event was a testament to the camaraderie and adventurous spirit within the team.

Advances in Technology

Gregor began his career on 5 August 1974. At the time, the workplace looked drastically different from today. Technology was in its nascent stages, with tools like fax machines and large photocopiers being revolutionary. Gregor recalls how the introduction of computers transformed the industry, making processes more efficient and fundamentally changing how work was done.

Over the years, Gregor witnessed the shift from manual to digital, from physical mail to instant communication. This transition brought about greater efficiency but also introduced the challenge of being constantly available. Despite these changes, Gregor adapted and thrived, contributing to his field with unwavering commitment.

Wisdom for the Next Generation

As Gregor prepares for retirement, he offers sage advice to the younger generation entering the construction industry. He emphasises the importance of hard work and dedication early in one’s career. “Get your qualifications early on,” he advises, “and reap the benefits of the hard work throughout the rest of your career.” Gregor also highlights the value of continuous learning and the willingness to seek guidance from mentors and colleagues.

Embracing the Future

As Gregor steps into retirement, he looks forward to dedicating time to his garden, which has been neglected due to his busy schedule. The unpredictability of the weather has made gardening a challenge, but it’s a task Gregor is eager to take on.

Beyond gardening, Gregor’s future plans include something entirely different: sailing. A friend who runs a sailing school in Gran Canaria has always encouraged Gregor to join, and now, with more time on his hands, he plans to pursue a course to become a competent crew member. This new adventure signifies a significant pivot from his career but is an exciting prospect that Gregor is keen to explore.

Gregor joined the company on 5 August 1974, so it was only fitting that his last day be 5 August 2024. As he reflects on his career, he is proud of what he has achieved.
