What if we could watch TV through the Internet?

01  Challenge

EVOLVING EXPECTATIONS

On-demand, streaming media forever changed the way the world connects with information and entertainment. Suddenly, cable customers across the U.S. wanted more than just 24/7 access to information and entertainment – they wanted their access to be faster and more reliable than ever before. To meet their customers’ rapidly evolving speed and reliability expectations, we partnered with Time Warner Cable (TWC) leadership to apply our proven processes and procedures to their large, enterprise data centers, and then to all of their critical facilities across the U.S. through the development of what is now known as the EDGE Program.

Beginning in 2014 with just over 40 projects valuing over $40 million – including new builds and live expansions – in 2016 the EDGE Program has evolved to over 50 projects worth more than $80 million.

02  Data Center

AMBITIOUS PROJECT, AGGRESSIVE TIMELINE

To support their changing business offerings, TWC developed plans for a new greenfield data center in Charlotte, NC and sought our help to manage the ambitious project. We were brought in as owner’s representatives for the state-of-the-art facility, and with the client’s fast-tracked 25-month schedule, we went to work – assembling the design, engineering, and construction teams.

The 180,000 SF space was designed in phases to allow for parallel site and structural construction during the final phases of design. Design began late in the first quarter of 2011, and the project was substantially complete, including final commissioning, in the third quarter 2012.

This facility was integrated into a formal Class-A office campus, which included the coordination of a new campus master plan with the data center, future office buildings, solar arrays, and parking garages. The LEED Silver, Tier III data center supports the initial critical load of 3.2 MW with the full ability to expand to the ultimate critical load of 8.4 MW over 50,000 SF of white space.

03  Expansion

BIG DATA GROWS EVEN BIGGER

Following the successful delivery of this new critical facility in Charlotte, we were entrusted with TWC’s second national data center in Centennial, Colorado. Similar to the Charlotte data center, this project was designed and constructed in 25 months and delivered matching capacities to its sister facility – supporting long term, redundant growth as TWC expands its customer base and service offering. The $114 million, 170,000 SF critical data center hosts applications that support approximately 70 million residential emails and manage the billing records of more than 15 million TWC customers.

04  Infrastructure

A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR WHAT’S NEXT

With the success of the national data centers, TWC asked us to help them develop a strategic infrastructure of critical facilities across the “edge of network” designed to support their goal of continuous service improvement.

This effort began in 2013 with the development of design standards and consistent processes for all projects – resulting in the build out or upgrading of over 150 sites to date. Since its inception, these efforts have successfully eliminated over 80% of the unplanned service outages across their portfolio while also supporting their enhanced service offerings with higher internet speeds and video-on-demand services. Aptly named the EDGE Program, it now serves as an invaluable blueprint for every critical facility project they undertake.

05  Centralization

IN GOOD HANDS

Beyond strategic program development and project implementation, we collaborated with TWC to establish key standards that allow for their over 1,000-site portfolio to be managed centrally, improving service quality, efficiency, and coverage for millions of subscribers.
