Project: Royal Sonesta Houston, Houston, TX
What if you could reinvent your hotel to be the premier option in your city?
A year after celebrating their transition to the regally-inspired brand, the owners of the Royal Sonesta Houston hotel announced their plans for a $25 million renovation of the 23-story downtown property. The hotel has enjoyed a prime location in the Galleria area for 29 years but had not been renovated since 2001, and was no longer aligned with the modern culture, business, and needs of the local community. The new ownership sought to remedy that and reposition the property as one of the premier hotels in the city and the state.
We were hired to manage the renovation, which encompassed 485 guest rooms and 53,000 SF of function space. The design took inspiration from the city itself – highlighting the energy, medicine, and space exploration industries that have driven much of Houston’s recent growth. Upgrades included new carpeting, wall coverings, window treatments, furniture, and minor bathroom updates. The main entrance, lobby, front desk, restaurant, and bar were also completely reconfigured, and ADA-compliant upgrades were made throughout the hotel. At the end of the nine-month process, the Royal Sonesta Houston earned AAA Four Diamond recognition and set a new standard for hospitality in a city that is poised for tremendous growth and development.
